Some apostolic and prophetic leaders are so insecure that they struggle giving themselves to a Paul and Barnabas, Peter and Apollos, horizontal style of relating.
Leaders often default to a hierarchical or more vertical way of operation after determining that horizontal relationships are difficult, challenging and require too much deference and honor.
It is true that horizontal peer level relationships requires a lot more work and require a different level of covenantal depth. Many relegate themselves to the vertical based upon their own insecurity when it comes to dealing with opposing ideas and strong personalities. Insecurity keeps everything safe and vertical so that they can control the outcome and not be questioned or challenged.
By choice the insecure default to Paul and Timothy style of relationships believing that there is safety in everyone relating to us up line so to speak.
This narrow approach to relationship causes the broadness of the foundations being laid to be limited and far less reaching from a regional perspective. Niche ministries can get away with over focusing on the vertical but regional ministries and platforms require a different level of engagement. If the goal is to be an apostolic family where leaders simply relate for encouragement, equipping and edification then the vertical can accomplish it but if regional impact and transformation are the goal then a deeper and broader level of relationship will be required.
Building vertically is a natural building posture for those who are beginning but eventually we have to set our sights on regional engagement taking us beyond the “family arena” to what I would call the “army of God” arena. Taking territory in the Spirit requires much of us but we all benefit from leaders who are willing to lay a more challenging foundation.
I am convinced that we will never see regions transformed with vertical thinking alone. We must be better than that and create an atmosphere of honor and deference rather than hierarchy and position. We all long to see better days ahead. Time to bridge the gap and tread where others fear to tread.
