Two issues that keep leaders stuck in the old are a love of money and selfish ambition. Self preservation and a lust for power are still the main tactics of the enemy. He loves to ensnare up and coming leaders to keep them from rising into their spiritual potential.
1. The love of money,
Mammon, Mammon, Mammon
Matthew 6:24-34 (KJV)
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
If a leader loves money and the benefits it brings and is not willing to surrender to the message and mandate of the Kingdom then that leader has no inheritance in the Kingdom.
2. The lust for power
Where there is selfish ambition there is every demonic thing.
James 3:14-16 (NKJV)
14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
When leaders are driven by a lust for power they are interested in harvesting all the glory for themselves. The idea of team evades them unless they are at the top of their pyramid structure because sharing credit with anyone compromises their self esteme. Those who seek their own validation and glory have no inheritance in the Kingdom.
The love of money and a lust for power are driven by the same drive.
“I will do this on my own, I got this”
Independence is not God dependence
Seeking the Kingdom 1st is about surrender. It is not about self preservation or self elevation.
These drives have no access to humility or grace. They can only operate in their own strength and craftiness.
Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV)
True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
The power of the Kingdom and the grace of the King is not wasted on bastards. It is given to sons and daughters.
Those who sow independently for their own self preservation and glory will reap the very thing they sow which is disciples who will kick them out of the way to get to the top pf the heep. Those who sow dishonor reap dishonor.
The path of the self seeking ultimately proves to be a very lonely one. Once performance wanes the fans lose interest and the endeavors normally end poorly.
There is a better way. It is the way of the Kingdom and it is all about the King.
We must learn to lay our crowns down at His feet.
It is a privilege to share in His inheritance as sons and daughters of the Father.
It is a joy to share that inheritance with our brothers and sisters. There is more than enough to go around.
The way of the Kingdom is driven by a heart of service with no strings attached other than simple obedience to the Holy Spirit. This is where power, grace and greatness are apprehended.
Luke 22:24-26 (NASB)
Who Is Greatest
24 And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25 And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
The Kingdom is about service and surrender. The true riches and power only come to us when we enter the narrow gate of obedience to His Spirit.
Luke 12:31-33 (NASB)
31 But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. 32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.
33 “Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys.
He will use us mightily as we learn to walk by faith and yield to His voice. Everything else is just religious activity.
The Kingdom is so much more than religious activity. We were made for it and it was created for us.
